Creative Philosophy

In my artwork I find process so intriguing-the unfolding of the idea, selecting found images, and creating new images. As the ideas form in my mind I always seem to stumble on to the technique or media that works best for the idea, rather than planning ahead.  The process continues until I find a satisfying balance in combining texture, pattern, color, shadow and light.

Of all the mediums I use in my work there is no preference on my part.  I tend to deconstruct to reconstruct and feel a connection between each medium I use:  Collage starts with an idea, or an image, or an experience then gets reimagined by juxtaposition of texture, color and compositional elements.  To me working in the medium of printmaking feels like a natural extension of my work in collage. I love the creative process. The big reveal at the end never fails to excite.  Drawing engages a satisfying connection of mind and hand in the tactile quality of the sketching and the imperfection of contour lines on paper.  Photography is a means of capturing moments that include that same juxtaposition.  A photograph might also be a single component to be used as a surprise element in a collage or as inspiration for a drawing.

Inspiration is everywhere-the tiny details and the grittiness of New York City as well as the vastness and variety of nature.  The contrast between urban environments and nature provides an endless array of texture and color that stimulates me to create.
